Wallaby spotted in Highgate Cemetery dies after surgery on foot - Update

A wallaby that briefly delighted and intrigued north London residents by its unexplained appearance in Highgate cemetery and surrounding streets has died.

The RSPCA was alerted when the wallaby made its way to a housing estate last week, where it was rescued from the children's playground and taken to the exotic animal reception centre near Heathrow airport. Vets decided to operate on the animal's broken foot, but the wallaby never recovered from the anaesthetic.

An RSPCA spokesman said they were extremely saddened. No one has yet accounted for the sudden appearance of the marsupial, a native of Australia, in Highgate cemetery.

The male wallaby was first spotted in the cemetery around two weeks ago, before making its way south towards Kentish Town. No zoo or private owner has reported a missing wallaby.

Previously. And.
