Rat's tail found in man's 96th birthday cake

As Joseph Vallenti celebrated his 96th birthday with a slice of his favourite apple ring cake he got quite a surprise. Joe took one bite of the cake on Thursday night and complained. “Something isn’t right,” family members recall the Commack, New York, man saying after tucking into the store-baked “Signature Series” cake from King Kullen supermarket.

It wasn't the birthday cake itself, but what was inside the cake. A rat's tail. Neil Gold, who is dating Vallenti’s niece and lives with the victim, investigated the remaining cake - and allegedly found a five-inch-long rat’s tail still attached to the rodent’s hindquarters.

“I saw . . . something sticking out,” Gold said after taking the allegedly infested cake to the law offices of his friend, attorney Ed Yule. Ed Yule has a theory as to how the tail got inside the cake. "I personally am of the opinion that this cake was tampered with," Yule said.

Yule plans to turn the cake over to state officials for testing. King Kullen says it's had fresh bakeries inside its stores for more than 30 years and never has a rodent been found in any of their cakes. King Kullen said in a statement, "Product has been removed from the bakery and the premises has undergone a thorough inspection. There are no known safety or rodent issues in this bakery."
