Firefighters had to smash the windows of an illegally-parked BMW to access a fire hydrant during an eight-alarm blaze in East Boston on Wednesday.
The car was parked in front of a hydrant when the fire broke out. Firefighters smashed the car's windows to run a hose through it.
"Instead of that engine being operational in about a minute, minute-and-a-half, it was several minutes before that engine was operational," said Boston Fire Steve MacDonald.
The makeshift water line cost firefighters precious moments.
"When you don't have that water supply, and one hydrant can make a difference. It's just really unfortunate - and frankly, stupid," MacDonald said.
The owner, who lives in the neighbourhood, was also given a $100 ticket.
