Firefighters smashed BMW's windows to reach hydrant

Firefighters had to smash the windows of an illegally-parked BMW to access a fire hydrant during an eight-alarm blaze in East Boston on Wednesday.

The car was parked in front of a hydrant when the fire broke out. Firefighters smashed the car's windows to run a hose through it.

"Instead of that engine being operational in about a minute, minute-and-a-half, it was several minutes before that engine was operational," said Boston Fire Steve MacDonald. The makeshift water line cost firefighters precious moments.

"When you don't have that water supply, and one hydrant can make a difference. It's just really unfortunate - and frankly, stupid," MacDonald said. The owner, who lives in the neighbourhood, was also given a $100 ticket.

there is a part of me that's really happy his windows got smashed but there is another part thinking it would have been faster to just pass over the car

Just as an aside, the colours of the hydrants and the colours of their tops give the fire fighters an indication of the flow rate and pressure of the hydrant.

I bet they enjoyed that.

I could only be happier if there was kittens and puppies involved.

If the hydrant is close to the car, it's often not possible to run the hose over the car. The end of the line near the water source has to be very straight because of the pressure.

Maybe this had happened to the fire fighters, in the past, and they just were fed up with entitled a-holes who thought the rules didn't apply to them.
