20,000 bees took up residence on car

A car became a hive of activity after 20,000 bees made it their temporary home when a young queen, seeking a new hive, took up residence in its wheel well.

George Neal, 21, had parked his Nissan Micra outside his home in Southsea, Portsmouth, Hampshire, on Thursday when it was covered by the swarm of buzzing insects.

Portsmouth City Council got Graham Cook, a local bee keeper, to safely remove the huge swarm without harming them. Graham managed to isolate the queen bee, and then rounded up the rest of the bees in a basket and took them off to a safer place.

He said that this time of year is the height of the swarming season, where young queens leave their mother's hive to find a place to raise their own colony.

I bet beekeepers never have their cars stolen.
