Motorists were caught up in queues after a man wearing nothing but green tartan underpants was spotted running across the M8 in North Lanarkshire.
All lanes were restricted in both directions as the person ran between both carriageways and clambered over the bonnets of cars. Police were called to the scene at around 7am on Friday.
The incident caused significant rush hour delays on the carriageway, which runs between Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Traffic Scotland confirmed the pedestrian was "safely" in the hands of officers a short time later.
A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "We received a call at 6.55am of a man walking on a live lane of the M8 close to junction five eastbound at Shotts.
Officers attended and a man has been detained."
