Pig the unusual dog lives on despite the odds

Pig the unusual, oddly shaped dog was born in the woods northeast of Atlanta last autumn to a feral mother. Pig's profound birth defects make her survival and attitude remarkable. Indeed, it was Pig who saved herself and her sisters by barking, drawing the attention of a woman who took the dogs in. Kim Dillenbeck, from Helena, Alabama, was visiting her sister in Jefferson, Georgia, at Christmas when she heard about Pig. "I met some of her neighbours who came over for Christmas breakfast, and after hearing about Pig, we all went to her house," said Dillenbeck. "I bonded with Pig right away. I thought I'd either be with her or near her helping her find a home. Pretty quickly, I decided to be her mother because she probably wouldn't live," Dillenbeck said.

"We assumed that by now, she would be suffocating under her own organs, or something like that, because of her shape." Long involved in animal rescue, Dillenbeck believed that if Pig were to die from her condition, she could handle it emotionally. She's fostered sick dogs before and was with them when they died. "The lady who found her, the vet told her to have her (Pig) put down," said Dillenbeck. But Pig lives on, despite the odds. Dillenbeck said Pig came with the name, and so she kept it. Dillenbeck said Pig may have some Akita, but, really, who knows? "She's a mutt," Dillenbeck said. But beyond appearances, Pig is just a happy, fun-loving dog who likes to play fetch or wrestle with her housemates Lady and Tank, Welsh Corgis Dillenbeck has had for years.

At 8-months-old, Pig weighs about 15 pounds; her sisters are closer to 35-40 pounds. "She's not fully grown," Dillenbeck said. "She's still gaining weight. At this point, she has the potential to gain another 20 pounds, and that would probably kill her." But Pig's veterinarians, Dr David Fuller and Dr Rachael Hudson at Hope Animal Clinic, say Dillenbeck is doing everything right for Pig. "Pig doesn't know there's anything wrong with her," Dillenbeck said. But she has plenty of issues. Dillenbeck says Pig is missing part of her spine; she's missing several ribs. And she has vertebrae that are fused and twisted. Near her neck, her spinal cord splits into two separate cords. Her hips and joints are rotated in the wrong positions.

"The only time she ever cried out was when I got her (micro)chipped. Or when I accidentally stepped on her toe - and you have to step on it really hard," Dillenbeck said. "But she's vocal. She barks when she wants your attention. She makes a weird sort of sound when she's playful." Dillenbeck makes sure Pig eats slowly so she can swallow her food. Pig has choked before, and "I've actually had to Heimlich her a couple of times," Dillenbeck said. "She doesn't have the space in her to eat large meals without getting out of breath because her lungs are crowded." Though Dillenbeck's other animals are spayed or neutered, Pig hasn't been spayed because the veterinarians do not want to put her under anesthesia. "I don't expect she'll ever get out of my control and get a boyfriend," Dillenbeck said. As for Pig's prognosis, Dillenbeck said Dr. Fuller doesn't really know. "They've never seen anything like it, and they say it's going to be interesting."

Row over missing dog led to man threatening to blow off woman’s kneecaps before shooting man

A Florida man angry about his missing dog threatened to “blow” a woman’s kneecaps off and then shot the man who was also in the house, according to authorities. James Farrell Davis, 55, of Panhandle, Walton County, was charged on Tuesday with attempted murder, aggravated assault and armed burglary of an occupied dwelling.

Walton County Sheriff's Office say authorities responded to a residence on May 21 for a report of shots fired. Deputies discovered that Joseph Justice, 31, had been shot by Davis. Davis walked onto the property and confronted Heather Sue Carden about his missing dog. Davis had a shotgun and threatened to "blow her knee caps off." Davis also stated “No, I’m not going to jail for you, I’m gonna kill you.”

Justice heard the commotion and came out of the house, at which time Davis turned the shotgun toward him and stated, “and you too.” Davis fired the weapon at Justice, but missed the first time. Justice attempted to go back into the home to protect his three children. Davis pursued Justice and a struggle occurred. During the struggle, Davis fired another shot and hit Justice.

Justice was able to get a hammer and struck Davis in the head until he was able to get the gun away from Davis. Deputies took the weapon and the hammer, as well as a semi-automatic pistol found in Davis' possession. Both men were transported to Bay County Medical Center and have since been released. The children were not injured during the incident.

Woman jailed after throwing half-eaten sandwich in dispute over use of multiple parking spaces

A Florida woman was arrested on Tuesday after Fellsmere police obtained a warrant to arrest her for the charge of misdemeanor battery.

Police say Julia Hinebaugh, 20, argued with a victim over his use of multiple parking spaces, denying her ability to park.

Investigators say Hinebaugh and the victim called each other names in the presence of each other's children, allegedly prompting Hinebaugh to throw a half-eaten sandwich at the victim, striking him in the back of the head.

Hinebaugh was arrested and transported to the Indian River County jail without incident.

Jilted man charged with animal cruelty for tying sheep to trees in ploy to win back woman

A man from Severance, Colorado, faces two charges of animal cruelty after he allegedly tied two of his ex-lover’s sheep to a pair of trees in order to win back her affections.

William Brent Allen, 42, was arrested by a Weld County sheriff’s deputy on suspicion of aggravated cruelty to animals after a woman he dated for several months told police he took two of her sheep living at his residence and tied them to trees without food or water at Blue Spruce Park in Severance, according to an arrest affidavit. At around 1 or 2am on May 4th, Allen sent the woman text messages about the sheep, saying he wanted her to meet with him.

He said he would tie up the sheep at a bar in Severance if she did not meet with him. After refusing to meet with Allen, the woman went back to bed and awoke hours later to text messages from Allen saying he tied up the sheep and she needed to go get them. Some of the messages were reportedly derogatory, calling the woman a “whore,” “slut” and terrible person. The sheep were unable to get free, and one was strangled to death due to the way it was tied up. The second sheep was found later that day by a jogger.

More text messages to the woman from Allen were apologetic for the death of the sheep, with Allen worried he might lose his job and daughter over the situation. The woman later told authorities she believes Allen tied up the sheep to coerce her into continuing their relationship or to punish her for ending it. Allen was booked into the Weld County Jail and released after posting a $7,000 bond. He faces two misdemeanor charges of animal cruelty - neglect or mistreatment, and will next appear in Weld County District Court on June 19 for a pre-trial conference.

Man hospitalised after ram he was about to slaughter head butted him

A man from Dayton, Oregon, is in the hospital after being head butted by a ram on Thursday morning. Dayton firefighters rushed to Ben’s Meat Processing Company and found 49-year-old Kelly Duval lying on the ground with serious injuries.

“He got hit, then walked 100 yards. They found him on the ground,” said Dayton Fire Chief Bret Putman. Crews said they were told a 2-year-old ram was supposed to be slaughtered by Duval but ended up head butting him in the face when Duval stuck his head inside a pen when he couldn’t locate the animal.

The owner of the meat processing company, Ben Montelongo, said Duval has worked for him often over the years. Montelongo said he heard Duval yelling and rushed outside. He found him lying on the ground with injuries to his face and called 911.

According to authorities, Duval was flown to Oregon Health and Science University, where he is listed in serious condition and being treated in the trauma unit for back and neck pains. Montelongo said he may decide to let the ram responsible for head butting Duval live since it was “fighting for its life.”

Man wearing only tartan underpants caused rush hour delays on motorway

Motorists were caught up in queues after a man wearing nothing but green tartan underpants was spotted running across the M8 in North Lanarkshire.

All lanes were restricted in both directions as the person ran between both carriageways and clambered over the bonnets of cars. Police were called to the scene at around 7am on Friday.

The incident caused significant rush hour delays on the carriageway, which runs between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Traffic Scotland confirmed the pedestrian was "safely" in the hands of officers a short time later.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "We received a call at 6.55am of a man walking on a live lane of the M8 close to junction five eastbound at Shotts. Officers attended and a man has been detained."

Undertaker vandalised neighbour's car with flour for preventing him getting his hearse into work

An undertaker threw a bag of flour over his neighbour's prized Mercedes in a parking row outside his funeral parlour - and it set as hard as concrete. Horrified neighbour Peter Elliot was told his gleaming black car had £7,000 damage from the 2lb self-raising flour bag hurled by funeral director Julian Riley. A court heard the flour set like "brittle cement" when it rained to caused widespread damage to the car.

Undertaker Mr Riley, 39, took his flour power revenge when he was furious that his neighbour's Mercedes was stopping him getting his hearse into work. Riley admitted emptying the flour bag all over Mr Elliot's Mercedes, not suspecting it would cause such severe damage. But Mr Elliot, 60, was stunned at the repair bill when he took it to a specialist garage. They found the flour had dried on the paintwork like "brittle cement" and told him it would cost £7,397 to repair. Mechanic Lee Kedward, who examined the damaged car, told the court: "It was crystalised powder, like brittle concrete, it had gone hard.

"We tried to use hot soapy water but there were large pieces where you had to use your nail to scrape it off. You couldn't get it all off without scratching the paint." Mr Kedward added that Mr Elliot had told him he thought the residue was embalming powder rather than flour. Riley fell out with Mr Elliot after he bought a house opposite him in the village of Clydach, near Abergavenny, south Wales. Newport magistrates heard the pair had argued over parking for weeks before the flour attack.

Riley admitted damaging the Mercedes-Benz E-320. He told officers: "Unfortunately I was very annoyed and took the law into my hands and threw a packet of self-raising flour over his car. It was more or less the whole packet." Riley pleaded guilty to criminal damage but contested the cost of the damage to the Mercedes. He went to a second specialist who estimated the damage to the car was around £400. District Judge Richard Williams described it as a "spiteful and vengeful offence". He adjourned sentence until next month.
