Rampant Rabbit 'accidentally' stolen after it manoeuvred itself into the lining of man's jacket

A man “accidentally” stole a sex toy from an adult shop after it “manoeuvred itself” into the lining of his jacket, a court was told. David Hutchinson, 48, walked into Ann Summers in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, and bought £100 worth of items, Sunderland magistrates heard. But having stashed a £35 Rampant Rabbit in his pocket he left the store without paying. Prosecutor Lee Poppett said: “This matter of theft dates back to February 9.

“On that occasion Mr Hutchinson attended Ann Summers, which I am sure you are well aware, is a shop that sells a number of items of an adult nature. He paid for a number of items legitimately and left the store. It was later in the day that staff discovered a Rampant Rabbit sexual vibrator missing from its shelf.” Staff checked the CCTV footage and saw Hutchinson, of  Hendon, “secreting” the vibrator up his sleeve, the court heard. “He was seen to pick up various items,” Mr Poppett said.

“He told police he picked up the display model of the vibrator and placed it in his pocket, because he noticed there was a hole in the box. the item manoeuvred itself into the lining of his jacket Then and he failed to pay for it. He then got into a taxi, and it was only then that he realised the item was still in his pocket, but he failed to return it to the store.” Hutchinson, who suffers from spinal problems, cirrhosis of the liver and kidney failure, admitted theft.

Anna Haq, defending, said Hutchinson, who appeared on crutches in the dock, had pocketed the Rampant Rabbit due to his physical difficulties, to help him carry more items, and that the theft was accidental. “He was in the store and spent £100 on various items,” Mrs Haq said. “You can obviously see Mr Hutchinson has difficulties. He has put the item in his pocket to assist him with taking items to the till. He was too ashamed to return it to the store.” Hutchinson was fined £73, and told to pay £85 costs, a £20 victim surcharge and £35 in compensation for the Rampant Rabbit.
