Council officials in Devon have been left bewildered after people keep locking public toilet doors from the inside and then climb back over the top and run off.
Tiverton Town Council recently took on the manager of several toilets across the town, but have had to deal with vandalism including people purposely clogging loos with paper, or leaving them locked from the inside.
Speaking about the budgeting for public toilets at Tiverton Town Council's Finance and General Purposes meeting last Monday, town clerk John Vanderwoolfe explained: "The big problem we have with the toilets is of course, you never know when somebody is going to vandalise them.
"We have had trouble on several evenings where somebody has blocked the toilets.
The latest craze is that somehow or other they lock the toilet from inside and then climb over."
Council staff who make sure the toilets are maintained inspect the buildings weekly and have had to on occasion use ladders to unlock the toilet cubicles from the inside.
