Deer broke into home and jumped on bed

A family from Jasper, Southern Indiana, came home to find someone, or rather something, trying to get comfortable in one of their bedrooms. Darrell and Jan Blocker were surprised when a nine-point buck ensconced itself in their home’s master bedroom after breaking through a window. “When I first opened the (master bedroom) door I just saw a lot of rack,” Darrell said. “I didn’t bother counting.” Darrell said that he and Jan were not home when their house guest arrived. He was at work and Jan was getting her hair done.

Neighbour Frank Dedrick, was outside and witnessed the deer crash into the Blockers’ home through a guest-bedroom window. Frank said the deer, without appearing to be chased by anything, ran from the neighbourhood green space in his back yard. “It was a big buck,” Frank said. “It came across my yard, then it ran straight through that window.” Darrell said it was a double-paned, 30-by-30 inch window. The screen must have been entangled in the buck’s rack or legs long enough for it to be deposited in the master bedroom, which is where the buck went after leaving the guest bedroom and going through the kitchen area. Frank contacted Darrell’s sister-in-law, who lives in the same neighbourhood and who called him to the scene. Frank said he then took up position near the broken window so none of his neighbour’s cats or dogs got out. “I just shut the (master bedroom) door and called 911 right away,” Darrell said.

The Jasper Police Department were contacted and sent four officers to the animal complaint. Darrell said a couple of Dubois County Sheriff’s Department deputies also came to assist. Darrell said he, Jan and the officers present strategised ways to herd the buck outdoors, even going so far as to use a refrigerator as a gate at one point. “We had everything opened up so he could go out through the utility room,” Darrell said. “He just wouldn’t come out.” Eventually, the deer went into the master bath area long enough for police officers to open the bedroom window and remove its screen. After an 80-minute visit, the deer exited through the open window and bounded away, with Darrell taking a video of the deer’s return to the wild.

The buck scattered window glass inside the guest bedroom, scuffed flooring, punctured some drywall and dameged some vases and a painting. “Other than that,” Darrell said, “we were fortunate. I know when we start doing the estimate, it’s going to add up to more than you think.” But, he added, the quick action by Frank and his sister-in-law helped save the day. “It got me into the house before Jan got back home,” Darrell said, adding that he doesn’t know what would’ve happened had he or Jan walked into the house without advance notice there was a deer inside. With just a few drops of blood noticed, Darrell said, signs are the deer is going to be fine. “Jan and I really appreciate the work the (Jasper) police and county did to get him out safely and not have any more destruction than we did have,” Darrell said.
