Hammer-wielding raiders attacked two people in their Cambridge home but a man wearing Elmo pyjamas could hold vital clues to help police catch them.
Detectives are appealing for information after the terrifying aggravated burglary near the Ross Street Community Centre.
They have appealed for the man who was seen wearing Sesame Street pyjamas in the street to come forward as a possible witness.
A man and a woman in their 20s were victim to the assault on Friday night at about 9.30pm.
Neighbours have told of their shock at the attack after police cordoned off a block of flats in the street.
Detectives believe at least two burglars were involved and have issued a description of one of the raiders.
He was wearing a hi-visibility jacket and is described as a black man in his 30s, of large build who was wearing a grey hat.
Martina Sechi, 30, a neighbour of one of the victims, said: "I came home at 2am and there was a police car blocking off the path. They let me through to get home. When I got up at 8am there was a lot more police there and also the scientific police.
"It is awful what happened and really scary. I have never heard of anything like that happening around here.
"It's a nice quiet street with lots of families. I have always felt safe and happy here up until now.
Now I suppose I will just have to hope for the best."
The thieves escaped with cash and other items and the two victims went to Addenbrooke's for the treatment of minor injuries. Another person in the flat was not injured.
Police have urged the man wearing Elmo pyjamas to come forward.
A Cambridgeshire force spokesman said: "Officers are particularly keen to speak to a man who was wearing Elmo pyjamas
who may have witnessed the incident."
