Man guarding turtle's nest shot in buttocks with own gun by possibly intoxicated man

A Florida man believed to have been intoxicated was arrested on late Friday night after, authorities and witnesses said, he shot an elderly man with whom he was having an argument over a turtle's nest in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, sending the victim to the hospital. According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, 72-year-old Stan Pannaman went to the beach to watch over a turtle egg nest along with his friend Doug Young, President of South Florida's Audobon Society, at around 11pm. Young said he and Pannaman had volunteered to wait for baby sea turtles to hatch so they could help them into the ocean.

Then, Young said, they were approached by the subject, who engaged into a verbal altercation with the older men. "He said, 'I'm going to get you, you [expletive] sea turtle people,' and he said, 'I'm going to beat the [expletive] out of you,'" said Young. Young said things quickly grew heated from that point on. "He went to the nest and aggressively started pulling those four stakes around the nest. He started pulling the stakes out of the nest," he said. Young said he told the man, later identified as 38-year-old Michael McAuliffe, to stop what he was doing because he was breaking the law by messing with the nest, but he wouldn't listen.

"Things were escalating, and Stan said, 'Listen, I've got a gun,'" said Young, who added his friend then pulled out the small firearm hoping the suspect would back off. According to Young, the opposite happened. "He came at Stan, pulled him to the ground, and went after the gun," he said, adding the weapon somehow ended up in McAuliffe's hands. "He holds the gun up towards - kind of aims it more at Stanley than at me, and he says, 'I'm going to shoot you,' and there was a little bit of action," Young continued. "He didn't believe it was a real gun, and he shot Stan." When asked where his friend had been struck, Young said, "It's actually lodged in his behind."

He said Pannaman had also been pistol-whipped in the forehead. Rather than flee, Young said, McAuliffe stayed at the scene while he called the police. "When he realised [what had happened], he freaked out, sat down in the sand, put the gun down," he said. Within minutes, more than a dozen police officers arrived at the scene. Pannaman was transported to Broward General Hospital, where he was treated and released. The wound on his forehead did not require any stitches. McAuliffe remains behind bars and is facing multiple charges, including two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and weapon possession by a convicted felon. Pannaman continues to recover at home.

22 naked men and five naked women arrested at illegal sex party in hotel room

Police discovered an illegal sex party at a hotel in Auburn, Massachusetts, on Wednesday when they burst into a hotel room and found 27 naked individuals.

The women had been promised $5,000 to $10,000 for sex but were later told they would be working at a swingers party. The men ranged from 20 to early 60s, police said.

Inside the room, police found 22 naked men and five naked women. Police received a tip that a couple was running the party through an advertisement they had posted online.

All 27 people will be summonsed to court in connection with the party. The couple, 45-year-old John Lowell and 39-year-old Courtney Nicholopoulos, were arrested for running the party and ripping off the women. The women weren't paid.

Burglar ransacked house and washed dishes

Haylie Anderson returned to her home, in Milton, South Otago, New Zealand, to find the property "ransacked", apart from several dishes that had been neatly washed and dried. In her bedroom, clothes had been pulled out of drawers, the bed slept in, possibly by two people, and a strong odour of cannabis remained in the air.

She was particularly scared that bolts had been removed from her six-month-old baby's cot, while baby towels had been stolen. A week's worth of food had also been taken , and "my pantry pretty much cleaned out, and my freezer as well". "It was probably someone hard up, but I'm a solo mother myself with two young kids so it is a bit shitty that someone has done that to me.

"This has left me stuffed for this week," Anderson, who is on a benefit, said. "I budget down to the last cent to make sure my kids have what they need." The stolen food included four cans of baby food and Anderson had a blunt message to the person who stole from baby Lexie and her two-year-old son Jaxon. "It is disgusting to steal from children and take food out of their mouths," she said.

Among the carnage, the burglar also washed and dried two cups and two plates, fuelling speculation two people were involved. "I'm just trying to find some answers," she said. Police were investigating the break-in, with Senior Constable Jim Jordan, of Milton, saying it was probably the work of "some drunken idiot". The burglar gained access by forcing open a bathroom window of the rental property sometime between Wednesday and Saturday, he said.

Man who'd 'given up smoking' spotted by wife having a crafty cigarette on Google Street View

A man from Wirral in Merseyside who told his wife he had given up cigarettes has been caught smoking by Google Street View.

Donny Riding from Leasowe had been warned by doctors to give up his smoking habit after suffering from a heart attack. However, he didn’t heed his doctor’s advice and instead began to smoke in secret, unbeknown to his wife Julie.

That is, until he was caught having a crafty cigarette by one of Google Street View’s cameras. Julie said: “He’d been told to give up smoking after he had a heart attack.

“I confronted him and he denied it and he wouldn’t admit to it. He stormed out of the house and then later that day we’d heard that the Street View camera was driving around. When I checked it online I couldn’t believe it - there was no denying it now.”

Sex offender spared jail after wearing too short shorts in supermarket

A man has been spared jail after breaching his Sexual Offences Prevention Order by wearing shorts that were too short in a supermarket. Fifty-seven-year-old Ian Watkins of Cwmbran, was handed a ten week suspended prison sentence for breaching his order by wearing shorts which cut above the knee at Morrison’s in Torfaen, south Wales.

Newport Crown Court heard that on May 28, Watkins was buying beers when he was stopped by a Gwent Police officer, who recognised Watkins and knew he was in breach of his order by his clothing and arrested him. Prosecutor Rob Simkins told the court how Watkins was made subject of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order under the Sexual Offences Act 2003 in July 2013 where he was convicted of indecent exposure. “The order was made subject to five years,” Mr Simkins said. “He must not wear any short trousers or shorts in any public area that fall above the knee in breach of the Sexual Offences Order.”

Watkins told the court he owned two sets of shorts; one set of short shorts above the knee and a Sexual Offences Prevention Order approved pair. “These particular shorts had no lining and Watkins was not wearing any underwear,” Mr Simkins said. Watkins said he was merely completing some jobs that day which included going to the Post Office to collect his money, before visiting B&Q and Morrison’s for some beers. When Asked why he didn’t put on trousers Watkins said he didn’t think he would be out that long.

The court heard how Watkins has nine convictions for 19 offences, including gross indecency involving a child under the age of 16 in 2009 and exposure in July 2013. Defending Sophie Thoms said the court needed to consider the seriousness of the offence. “He was just not concentrating enough on his clothing,” she said. “He caused no harm [and] he has showed remorse.” Ms Thoms said he pleaded guilty immediately after being taken into the police station. Chairman of magistrates Vivienne Mabbott sentenced Watkins to 10 weeks imprisonment suspended for 12 months and ordered him to pay £345 in court costs within seven days.

Police called to 'dead animal in canal' found a duvet filled with coconuts

Police investigating a suspicious package found in a canal, thought to be a dead animal, discovered a duvet filled with coconuts.

Officers in Trafford, Manchester, were called after a walker pulled what he believed to be a bag full of animal bones from the Bridgewater Canal near Longford Wharf in Stretford.

The man noticed the suspicious-looking package floating in the water at about 4pm on Sunday and took it upon himself to haul it on to dry land. He told police he thought it might be a dead animal because it had a ‘strong odour’ and was ‘leaking white fluid’.

It was later discovered the bundle was in fact a duvet filled with coconuts, which had been tightly-wrapped and hurled into the water. It is not known where the unusual package came from or why someone chose to dispose of the fruit in such a way.
