Naked driver with suspended licence found to be in possession of drugs

A naked man was arrested after deputies found a crack pipe and crack cocaine in the pick-up truck he was driving. An Indian River County Sheriff’s deputy noticed the pick-up pulling into a Walgreens at about 3am in Vero Beach, Florida.

Knowing Walgreens opens at 7am and that no one should be there, the deputy approached the vehicle. The deputy spotted a man “completely naked," an affidavit states. The deputy shone his flashlight on the man, later identified as 54-year-old James Lewis, who started reaching toward a cup holder.

Lewis was removed from the vehicle, and the deputy asked why he kept reaching toward the cup holder. “Man you might find a crack pipe there,” Lewis is quoted as saying. In addition to a glass crack pipe, the deputy also found crack cocaine rocks. It wasn’t immediately clear why Lewis was naked. The deputy asked Lewis for his licence, which he said was in his shorts.

The shorts were on the floor of the vehicle. Deputies then determined his licence was suspended. Asked whether he knew that, Lewis said: “Yes, I know it is but I have to drive you know.” Lewis, of Micco, was arrested on charges including possession of drug paraphernalia, knowingly driving while his licence was suspended and possession of crack cocaine.
