Two lanes of busy city tunnel shut to rescue kitten from traffic

This lucky kitten almost used up all its nine lives after ending up in a Melbourne, Australia tunnel. The miracle moggy, since christened Dodge for the way he weaved through traffic, owes his life to CityLink workers who rescued him.

CityLink received a call about a kitten in the Burnley Tunnel between 6pm and 7pm last Wednesday, but a drive-through and a scan of video footage revealed nothing. Spokeswoman Selby-Lynn Nicholas said an incident response crew headed to the tunnel after a safety system alerted them to a car that stopped at about 11.30pm, and they spotted the kitten.

She said two lanes of the tunnel were shut while staff coaxed Dodge from under their vehicle. "They gave it a bit of a cuddle and took it to the control, where where the guys on call gave it some old roast beef from the staff fridge and called the Lost Dogs' Home," she said.

Lost Dogs' Home general manager Sue Conroy said the kitten did not have a microchip to identify him. "He's a gorgeous little character so he has been somebody's pet. If no one comes forward by the weekend, he'll be looking for a new home early next week," Ms Conroy said. She said she hoped the kitten had escaped from a vehicle and not been dumped in the tunnel.
