Falling cactus destroyed carport and three vehicles

A saguaro cactus tumbled over on Sunday morning, taking down a carport and burying two vehicles and a golf cart.

Residents at the home close to Paseo de Golf in Green Valley, Arizona, said they heard a loud crash at about 5:30am and discovered the carport ripped from the house.

The cactus, which I believe is pictured here, came to a rest across the driveway with several arms broken off. One rolled into the street and another landed against a neighbouring home.

Saguaros have very shallow root systems. Rain overnight may have softened the soil and brought the cactus down. The damaged vehicles include an SUV and a vintage Cadillac car.

"Rain overnight may have softened the soil and brought the cactus down."

Or the rot at the bottom combined with its extreme top-heaviness.

Eek. Does this go on the auto comprehensive or on the homeowner's?

They got lucky. That thing could have brought down the main part of the house.
