Worker stuck to floor suing contractor for nearly $1 million

A subcontractor in Lake Oswego, Oregon, who says he walked across an office building's floor only to discover another subcontractor had removed the carpet but not the glue is suing the general contractor for $985,000.

Buckley R. Purdy claims in his suit that he strained both knees and a hip getting himself out of the sticky situation. The suit states that on June 15, 2012, he was tearing down drywall and framing as part of a remodeling job when he walked across the sticky floor.

The strains to his knees required surgery, according to the suit, which was filed this week in Multnomah County Circuit Court. Purdy faults general contractor Bremik Construction of Southeast Portland for allegedly providing an unsafe work environment.

Purdy, who worked for subcontractor Commercial Interior Contractors Inc., is seeking $600,000 for past and future medical expenses and wages. He is also seeking $385,000 for pain, suffering and his loss of enjoyment in activities that are no longer possible for him.

Police seek man who assaulted ice cream truck driver with fudge bar

A man used a fudge ice cream bar to assault an ice cream truck driver after accusing the driver of giving his daughter incorrect change for a purchase

The assault happened in Rock Hill, South Carolina, at around 4pm on Wednesday. April Johnson told police that a girl bought ice cream for her father.

The father later confronted Johnson for not giving his daughter enough change. Johnson said she told the man she did give correct change and then he assaulted her with a fudge ice cream bar. Police said they saw a red mark on the inside of Johnson’s arm.

A witness said he saw the assault. Johnson and the witness told police the man drives a small white truck and lived close by. Officers were not able to find the man and the case remains open.

Katherine Galliher, 50, was arrested on Tuesday night after deputies were called to a domestic disturbance at the home in Palm Coast.

The victim said Galliher threw the cat at him and the animal hit him in the face, busting his lip.

Galliher was charged with domestic battery.

Orphaned bear cub spent night in police station

Officers at Myrtle Creek Police Department in southern Oregon received a surprising visitor at the station on Monday when a young man dropped off a black bear cub.

Police Chief Don Brown said the man heard the cub’s distress calls outside of his house, and brought it to the station in a large plastic container with a lid. Officers “babysat” the cub at the station all night until the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife picked it up.

Though the man ended up helping the cub, Brown said it was a “very, very dangerous” decision to take matters into his own hands. “Had mama bear been around the corner and seen him yelling, she would have attacked him without hesitation,” he said.

Officers returned to the location where the cub was found and tried to call the mother, Brown said, but were unable to find her. The cub is now at the University of Oregon receiving a veterinary checkup, and after that will be released into a yet-undetermined wildlife sanctuary.

Yorkshire Terrier survived for almost a month by eating corpse of its deceased owner

A Yorkshire Terrier in France survived for nearly a month locked inside a home by eating the dead body of its deceased owner.

Firefighters made a macabre discovery on Wednesday in the city of Toulouse, in south western France, when they discovered the decomposing body of woman in her home. The woman, aged 64, is believed to have lain undiscovered for around a month.

Firefighters quickly realized that her body had been partially consumed by her pet Yorkshire Terrier, which was trapped in the home without food since the owner’s death. The woman lived alone, and it appears no one had reported her missing.

It was only when neighbors noticed a foul smell that they alerted authorities. The owner apparently died of natural causes and police have not discovered any signs of homicide. However, the investigation is ongoing.

Man wearing pig mask and toy helmet arrested on suspicion of impersonating a police officer

A man who dressed up in a pig mask, toy policeman's helmet and hi-vis jacket was arrested on suspicion of impersonating a police officer. Steven Peers said he has often donned the mock outfit to perform ‘comical parodies’ of Greater Manchester Police after becoming unhappy with how officers behaved during the Barton Moss anti-fracking protests.

He wore it around Manchester city centre while filming sketches on Thursday but was stopped by an officer near Bootle Street police station. Video of the incident shows the policeman pose questions about the outfit before arresting Mr Peers, 46, on suspicion of impersonating a police officer. Father-of-four Mr Peers was held in custody for eight hours before being bailed until July – while the outfit was confiscated.

He said: “My reaction to being arrested was total disbelief. I was wearing a toy hat and a pig mask and was arrested for impersonating a police officer. It’s ridiculous. If they want to take it to court they will be a laughing stock because there is no substance to it whatsoever.” Mr Peers, an electrical engineer, said he began performing skits using his comic character ‘Officer 666’ to highlight the ‘violence, corruption and bad behaviour’ which he believes has been carried out by GMP.

He said: “I don’t think it’s antagonistic. It’s just a parody making fun of GMP. I’ve dressed like this at Barton Moss, in front of Swinton police station and in front of the force HQ in Newton Heath. Other officers have laughed it off.” A GMP spokesman said: “At about 4pm on Thursday 22 May 2014, a man was arrested in Manchester city centre on suspicion of impersonating a police officer. He was released on bail until 17 July 2014 pending further inquiries.”

Spate of car fires caused by nesting birds

Car owners on Orkney have been warned to check under their bonnets regularly after a spate of fires caused by birds nesting in vehicle engine compartments.

There have been at least three car blazes over the past few weeks which have been caused by nests. Because of the lack of trees, birds on Orkney lay their eggs in any dry space they can find.

In the latest incident, a car in St Margaret's Hope was completely destroyed by a fire caused by a nest built by a starling over the space of an evening. Kim Patching, the owner of the car, said that it would not start and then in a matter of minutes smoke and flames emerged from under the bonnet.

Johnathan Porterfield discovered a starling's nest complete with four eggs in his electric vehicle but has decided to leave it until the birds hatch out and leave. Mr Porterfield, who is a dealer specialising in electric vehicles on the islands, said he would be using another car until the birds were fledged.
